Dealing with your winter hair can be a real pain, even here in San Diego where it’s more “winter” than WINTER and doesn’t usually get that cold.

But when the warm weather is gone and cool weather is here for a while, your hair can become dry, brittle, and frizzy. Especially if you’re living in or visiting extremely cold climates, you’ve most likely given in to that undesired hat head look and dreams of the warmer months rather than looking at your frizzy mane. But fear not- there are many ways to keep your hair healthy during the winter – and most of them are super easy!

5 Tips for Battling Winter Hair

Stay Hydrated

Hydrated hair is happy hair. The products you use during the warmer months may be great when it’s warm, but the very same products may be drying out your hair once it gets chilly. Try out a heavier conditioner to seal moisture in. I like Bumble and Bumble Super Rich Conditioner. It moisturizes without weighing your hair down or making it look greasy, and it smells great to boot. Even better, it does a great job with straight, wavy, or even curly hair.

Keep Your Wash Lukewarm

Even though the scorching hot water feels good when it’s cold outside, restrain yourself from turning the handle all the way to H when washing your hair. Hot water opens the pores in the scalp and cuticle of your hair shaft, which is great for removing oil, but can also lead to dehydrating your scalp and hair. Just as hot water rinses away oil and dirt, it also strips your hair of its natural oils. Heat causes frizzy hair, and this holds true for hot water, too.

Swap Out Your Summer Products

We change so many routines in the winter, don’t forget to switch up your styling products too. For finishing, Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil UV Protective Dry Oil Finishing Spray will add moisture back into hair and provide UV protectant and shine at the same time. It helps tame frizzies and won’t weigh down your hair.

Braids and Buns Are Your Friends

If you’re going the hat wearing route, try a loose braid or bun underneath. Spritz a little of the aforementioned dry oil finishing spray to combat frizzies, and you have a look that is gentle on your hair and keeps you warm at the same time.

Battle Hat Hair

When you’re working against hat hair, all you need is a little bit of the right product. If your hair looks like you’ve been experimenting with electrical currents when you take your hat off, Bumble and Bumble’s Brilliantine will help tame your tresses. The dry oil finishing spray will achieve similar results in a different format (cream vs. spray). If you take your hat off and find your flat hair needs texture, I like this Bb Dryspun spray to bring a little life back to your hair.
