how-to-volumize-your-hair

Is your hair volume-challenged? One of the most common questions we get at Flirt Urban Salon in San Diego is “how can I make my flat hair more voluminous?”. Below are some of our stylists favorite tips for pumping up the volume and creating more body and dimension.

Switch Your Hair Part

If you always part your hair in the same place your hair will be trained to stay that way and begin to fall flat. Moving your part to the other side can create instant volume. If you’re worried about it flopping back, mist it lightly with hairspray to help maintain hold.

Blow-Dry Your Hair Upside Down

Lift your roots up off of your scalp by blow drying your hair upside down. If you have bangs, dry them rightside up first, or you’ll get that “There’s Something About Mary” look.

Get a Volumizing Haircut & Color

Long, single-length hair will typically make fine hair look flatter, as opposed to mid-length or short haircuts that won’t drag your hair down as much. Adding soft layers will also help add texture and volume. Your hair color can also affect the look of volume. Color can be placed strategically to make your hair look fuller. For instance, highlights can add dimension to make your hair look thicker with more body and movement.

Use Volumizing Shampoo & Conditioner

The right shampoo and conditioner can make a big difference when it comes to volume. Bumble and bumble’s Bb.Thickening Shampoo is a lightweight cleanser made for fine to medium hair that preps it for airy, voluminous styles. Follow with Bb. Thickening Conditioner and your hair will be set for full-bodied success. Another great option is Bumble and bumble’s Surf Foam Wash Shampoo, made with a blend of volume-enhancing minerals and softening ingredients help give a nourished, tousled look and feel.

Try a Volumizing Pre-Styler

A volumizing pre-styler can help give lift to your hair and provide all-day support to your style. We love Bb.Thickening Spray, a pre-styler that creates lasting lift, volume, and body for fine to medium thick hair. Another favorite for fine to medium hair is Bb. Styling Creme, which is a part mousse, part creme body-building styler that adds lift and helps enhance curls. Simply apply either of these onto damp hair, then blow-dry for a luscious look.

For medium to thick hair, try Bb.Thickening Creme Contour, a lightweight, styling creme that adds texture and definition to full-bodied styles.

Use a Finishing Spray

After styling your hair, help it stay put with a finishing spray like Bb.Thickening Dryspun Finish, a hairspray that adds lift, airy fullness, and texture that lasts.

Apply Dry Shampoo

When your hair gets oily, it can sabotage your volume by weighing down your strands. Dry shampoo absorbs oil and creates volume and texture. Bumble and bumble’s Prêt-à-powder Très Invisible Dry Shampoo is our absolute favorite dry shampoo (especially now that it’s available in a spray).
