Unless your hair is like a Chia Pet, growing it out is going to take time. However, Flirt Urban Salon in San Diego has put together a few pro tips you can follow to help your hair grow longer more quickly.

Trim Your Hair Every 1-2 Months

It may sound counterintuitive, but trimming your hair will actually help it grow longer. We recommend trimming your hair a half inch every one to two months. If you don’t trim your split ends, they can cause breakage, slow hair growth, and can split up towards the roots of your hair.

Don’t Shampoo Every Day

Washing your hair every day can dry your hair out and cause your scalp to overproduce oil. Try cutting back to shampooing only three times a week. On other days you shower, you can just rinse your hair with water and then apply conditioner. If your hair feels dirty or oily between washes, try a dry shampoo like Bumble and bumble’s Prêt-à-Powder, which is now available in a spray.

Use a quality conditioner every time you shampoo your hair. Also keep in mind that hot water is rough on your hair and can lead to breakage. Keep the water temperature down when showering and rinse with cool water to help seal and strengthen your hair cuticles.

Brush Your Hair Properly

Hair is more breakable when it’s wet, so be very careful when brushing your damp hair. If you need to get some knots out after your shower, use a wide-toothed comb or a Wet Brush and start by brushing the ends of your hair and work your way up. You can also try a detangler like Bumble and bumble’s Prep Primer or Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer.

Don’t Overdo It with Hot Tools

Just like hot water, hot tools can damage your hair and stunt its growth. Try to use your hot styling tools less often. If you have to heat things up, first apply a heat protectant like Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer before blow drying or styling your hair. Bumble and bumble’s Save The Day Daytime Protective Repair Fluid is also offers heat/UV protection.

Eat Healthy & Drink Plenty of Water

Eating healthy gives your hair the nourishment it needs to grow. Some foods that have been known to help with hair growth are salmon, spinach, walnuts, blueberries, sweet potatoes, and greek yogurt. Staying hydrated is also important for hair growth. Drink water with every meal and bring a water bottle with you to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Take Your Vitamins

To supplement your healthy eating, consider a multivitamin formulated and labeled “For Hair, Skin and Nails”. These supplements typically contain vitamins that support hair health like Biotin, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B. Always talk to your doctor before starting any new supplements.

Massage Your Scalp

Once every day or so, gently massage your scalp by using the tips of your fingers to make circular motions. This increases blood flow to the scalp, stimulating the hair follicles to grow faster.

Move Your Ponytail

If you put your hair into a ponytail on a daily basis, try pulling your hair back in a slightly different spot each day. When you wear your ponytail in the same spot every time, it can wear down the strands and slow hair growth.

Use a Satin or Silk Pillowcase

Even if your cotton or linen pillowcase feels soft, the fibers are rough enough to grab strands of hair and cause breakage. Switching to a satin or silk pillowcase will reduce friction on your hair while you sleep.

Apply a Hair Mask

For deep nourishment, apply a repairing and hydrating hair mask one to two times per week. We love Bumble and bumble’s While You Sleep Damage Repair Masque, which is available at Flirt Urban Salon. This overnight treatment is infused with Evening Primrose to help repair past wear-and-tear and fortify against future damage. Using a hair mask will keep your hair strong, hydrated, and growing.
