Hair extensions are so much fun. They can add length and fullness to your hair, or a playful streak of color. Extensions can fix a bad haircut, or allow you to pull short hair into a bouncy ponytail.
At Flirt Urban Salon in Downtown San Diego, our expert hair stylists offer easihair pro semi-permanent tape-in hair extensions made from 100% cuticle intact Remy human hair. Your stylist will help you choose from a wide variety of colors and lengths depending on the look you want to rock.
Once our work is done and you leave Flirt Urban Salon with lustrous, natural-looking hair extensions, there are some important tips you should know to help you take care of your extensions and keep the “oohs” and “aahs” from admiring friends and strangers coming. The better you take care of your hair extensions, the longer they’ll last.
How to Wash & Condition Hair Extensions
It’s important to use quality hair care products for your extensions, but you don’t want to overdo it, as too much product can cause build-up and tangling. Never use any hair products containing oil, alcohol or ethanol, because they can damage your extensions and wear down the adhesive on the tape.
You’ll want to use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. We recommend Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Sulfate Free Shampoo and Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Conditioner or Bb. Curl Custom Conditioner (you can snag all three at Flirt). When you shampoo your hair, tilt your head back and gently massage from the top of your head downwards, making sure not to pull on your hair too much or scrub too hard.
When applying conditioner, avoiding the root area of your extensions and use it only from mid-shaft to the ends of your hair. You’ll want to do the same with serums or oils, applying only from mid-shaft to the ends of your hair to avoid contact with the tape. Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil (also available at Flirt) is great to use on the ends of your extensions to keep the hair healthy and shiny over time.
How to Dry Your Hair Extensions
Avoid scrubbing your wet hair with a towel. Instead, wrap your hair in the towel to remove the initial moisture. You’ll also want to hold off on brushing your hair extensions while your hair is wet.
If you’re going to use a blow dryer, be sure to keep the temperature at medium to avoid heat damage. You can use a brush and other styling tools once your hair is about 50% dry. Never go to bed with wet hair extensions (we know it’s tempting), and always make sure your hair is dry and pulled up to keep your hair from tangling while you sleep.
And we know San Diego girls like to stay active, so when working out or swimming with hair extensions, be sure to remove excess sweat and chlorine.
How to Brush Your Hair Extensions
We recommend brushing your tape-in hair extensions about 2-3 times a day with a hair extension brush like the Wet/Dry Detangling Brush from easihair pro. Hold the roots and brush your natural hair with the extensions to avoid unnecessary pulling. To brush out tangles, you can use a wide-tooth comb and start at the bottom of the hair and work your way up. As we mentioned, you shouldn’t comb your hair extensions while your hair is wet.
How to Use Hot Styling Tools with Hair Extensions
Curling irons and straighteners can be used, but the more you apply heat on your hair, the shorter the lifespan of your hair extensions. Since extensions aren’t connected to a root, they don’t have the same oils and nutrients as the hair growing out of your head, so before using hot tools, give your hair a spritz with a heat protectant spray.
Use a lower setting on your hot styling tools and keep heat away from your extension tape as much as possible. Heat will weaken the adhesive bond on your tape and cause your extensions to slip out.
Reapplying Hair Extensions
Tape-in hair extensions will need to be reapplied every 6-8 weeks, depending on how you care for them. During reapplication, one of our stylists will remove the extensions, re-tape, and place them closer to your scalp to keep your hair healthy and looking its best.
During removal of your extensions, you will see a small amount of naturally released hairs in between the tape bonds. Don’t freak out and think you’re losing hair due to wearing extensions. The average person loses 50-100 strands per day and it’s completely normal.
